NAME: Alec Gideon Lightwood
CANON: Shadowhunters
CANON POINT: Epilogue of 3x22.
AGE: Not explicitly stated in canon, so I’m going with 24-25.
BACKGROUND: See here up to the end of Season 2. This contains a summary of Season 3, which I will elaborate on with what is important re: Alec.
The wiki entry ends at the end of Season 2 with the second link continuing into Season 3. Various demonic entities invade New York as Alec, acting now as Head of the Institute, begins navigating intricate interpersonal relationships between the heads of the various Downworlder clans in order to close the gap between Shadowhunter society and the rest of the Downworlders.
Magnus eventually sacrifices his magic power to save Jace from Lilith’s control. Magnus’s struggles to regain his magic and makes a deal with his demonic father, Asmodeus. Asmodeus manipulates Alec into breaking up with Magnus by promising to return his magic if Alec never speaks to him again. Though Alec was planning on proposing to Magnus, he eventually makes the difficult choice to sacrifice their relationship so Magnus can once again live as a warlock, believing he cannot be happy without his magic.
Magnus finds out about the deal Alec made with Asmodeus. He banishes Asmodeus back to Edom. Soon enough a demonic rift opens in the Shadowhunter capital of Alicante, and Alec and Magnus race to protect Alec’s homeland. The two become engaged as they stand in front of the rift to Edom, and Alec says goodbye to Magnus as Magnus willingly goes to Edom to close the portal and prevent further demon infestation.
Alec reunites with Magnus in Edom and Isabelle kills Lilith, also in Edom, which destroys the dimension. The group returns to New York and Alec and Magnus finally get married.
The series then jumps forward a year, showing that Alec has become the Inquisitor of the Clave, and his sister Isabelle now runs the Institute in New York. Alec works alongside Magnus, who is the High Warlock of Alicante (a title never before held by anyone), to further close the gaps between Shadowhunters and Downworlders.
PERSONALITY:
Alec, raised in the secluded and insular Shadowhunter society, grew up only knowing how to be a soldier in a never-ending war against demons. As a member of the distinguished Lightwood family, Alec was burdened under the weight of the expectations of being the eldest of four children. Raised in a world where law and order ruled. He is the foil to Jace, his adopted brother and parabatai (bonded partner in battle), who, though he is arrogant and often bends the rules, is more seen to be the golden child of the Lightwood family because of his immense skill in battle. Despite having the expectations of continuing the Lightwood line, Alec spent his childhood feeling as if he were living in Jace’s shadow. Alec looked up to him as a worthy warrior, but butt heads with him often as Jace followed his heart and Alec followed the rules.
Being the only people to have angel blood running through their veins, Shadowhunters tend to be extremely arrogant and haughty, looking down on mundane (normal humans) and Downworlders, who are an assortment of races that have demon blood in their veins: vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc. As Alec climbs the power ladder in the Institute, the home base of Shadowhunters in New York, he begins interacting directly with Downworlders. He sees first-hand the prejudice that Downworlders suffer from his own people and he begins to push away from following strict, archaic laws drenched in prejudice against Downworlders and works to subvert these laws to bridge the inequality between their races. Though Alec sometimes makes decisions that show his privilege – such as when he asks Magnus Bane, a warlock, to offer his hair so he can be tracked and tagged after Alec’s position is threatened by the then-Inquisitor – generally he does what he thinks is right. His behavior, when pointed out especially by someone he loves, is quickly righted as best as he knows how. By the end of the series, Alec’s work entirely focuses on improving the relationship between Shadowhunters and Downworlders.
A majority of his growth through the series is connected to his sexuality. Alec spent most of his life as a closeted gay man, deeply in denial, having been raised in the naturally homophobic Shadowhunter society. Combined with his serious nature, he sometimes comes across as cold and overly cautious in order to keep to himself. Though at the end of the series Alec is much more open about his sexuality through the rapid growth he experiences in his budding relationship and eventual marriage to Magnus Bane, he still plays his cards mostly close to the chest outside of the ring of people he is close with. Though Alec has learned to be less hard on himself through the acceptance of his sexuality and embracing the forbidden romance he holds with Magnus Bane, he continues to harbor serious worries about whether he is good enough to bear his responsibilities or to protect those he cares about.
A lot of Alec’s self-worth is tied up in his relationships to others. Even later in Season 3, Alec proclaims that “he is nothing” without Jace. He views himself as a failure if something goes wrong, even if an event was outside his control. The most emotionally volatile Alec becomes is when he knows he’s fucked up something. This happens quite a few times as he navigates being in a relationship, especially when it comes to lying or hiding particular secrets from others (for, what Alec believes, is their own good.) He sometimes struggles with letting others help themselves in a way different than he believes is best, which comes up often during his attempts to pull Isabelle, his sister, away from a toxic relationship she develops after becoming addicted to a drug called yin fen.
Magnus once described Alec as someone who would “blow up the very ground [he] stands on to make something right.” Linked to the often overbearing expectations of his Shadowhunter parents, Alec can be excessively self-critical and self-sacrificing. While possessed by a demon, Alec murders Clary’s mother. After he is freed from the possession, Alec purposefully inflicts wounds on himself in an attempt to self-flagellate, isolating himself from his friends and family in order to suffer alone as the guilt eats at him. This leads later to him nearly committing suicide from the sheer amount of guilt that he carries after he is inflicted with a fear spell. Though up to this point Alec has viewed Clary as a threat that could break up his family and a general nuisance, he vows to do anything he can to make it up to her afterwards.
Overall, Alec’s most definitive trait is he is intensely protective of anyone close to him. He was raised as extremely family-oriented and initially did not trust anyone who was an “outsider.” He specifically chose the bow as his weapon of choice so he could be the look-out for his siblings in battle to better keep them safe. Many of his conflicts draw from his loyalty to his parent’s Shadowhunter values versus his own morals. In time, especially pushed by his relationship with Magnus, Alec begins working to change Shadowhunter society from within. Whenever he deems someone part of his inner circle, he is loyal to them to a fault and will protect them through any means necessary.
Normally more on the quiet and concise side, Alec can burst into long speeches when impassioned by something he truly believes in. It’s on more than one occasion that he gives emboldening speeches to fellow Shadowhunters before they go on a hunting mission. This is where his ability to lead shines, and he appears the most confident. When it’s prompted by something emotional, he gestures wildly and his lets his words tumble out, often tripping over himself to get them out as fast as possible. On the other hand, he is quite capable of compartmentalizing his feelings when there is a need for it, separating his emotions from his duty. This comes into play such as when, after Magnus breaks up with him, he soon after is forced to ask him as a powerful warlock for his help, despite knowing Magnus is upset with him (and he’s intensely upset himself.)
POWERS/ABILITIES:
- Naturally heightened speed, endurance, strength, etc. for fighting demons.
- Parabatai bond. Alec is more powerful than other Shadowhunters because of a blood-bond he has with his adopted brother, Jace. Parabatai typically can use their partners for increased abilities when fighting together, but even apart they offer latent ability increase. As a result of the bond, Alec can “feel” Jace’s presence, and if their bond is ever severed (like in the case where Jace dies), he experiences excruciating pain. Any runes Jace draws on Alec are also stronger than runes he draws himself (in case we ever get a Jace in game.)
- Trained extensively in martial arts training and swordfighting from a young age.
- Excels in archery. Alec makes a shot described as nearly impossible to do at one point. Runes etched into the arrows make them powerful enough to blow apart concrete without breaking.
- Education on angels, demons, and Downworlder mythology and physiology. Shadowhunters are also taught Latin and some Enochian (which is what the runes technically are based on.)
- Can apply runes to his skin, his weapons, and objects in the world using the stele. Runes are angelic symbols that act as incantations that imbue specific effects and fade over time. Each rune only has one particular effect. Some are always active, while others require a touch from a stele to activate them. They cannot be safely applied to non-Shadowhunters without killing them.
I’m including a list of the runes that Alec would most normally use on himself (or objects) with a small explanation of each. Please let me know if I need to elaborate on the uses of any runes in regards to power limiting.
Runes:
Equilibrium: For balance in battle.
Fortitude: Mental/emotional strength, meant mainly for battle.
Heightened Speed: On top of their already naturally heightened speed (this has shown to be fast enough that, when required, they can appear to move as a blur to normal people.)
Soundless: Silent footsteps/stealth increase.
Promise: This is a "mental" rune and is meant for emotional/mental strength.
Bridge: Tracking. The tracking marks are described as a way to find a specific object. The rune will help give him a direction in where the object lies as long as it is relatively close by.
Block/Deflect: Faster reflexes in blocking/dodging in battle, but also prevents him from being tracked magically, this one is permanent and is visible on his neck.
Accuracy: Self-evident, in battle.
Recall: Mental recall, can be almost photographic if necessary.
Angelic Power: A rune all Shadowhunters have somewhere on their body. It is mostly symbolic but also is a means of strengthening the natural abilities having angel blood gives them.
Agility: Generally, sort of melds into the Heightened Speed rune.
Iratze: Pretty much one of the most important runes to Shadowhunters. This rune is used to heal all manner of wounds, from minor to major injuries, though it doesn't work on demonic poisons. It can slow blood loss and knit broken bones/torn skin. Most major injuries do require specialized healing. This rune can be “pre”-drawn on his body but needs to be “activated” by touching a stele to it. Typically, as long as an Iratze can be activated, Shadowhunters can be kept from the edge of death until they reach a more powerful healer.
Calm Anger: Another mental/emotional one, helps to calm himself.
Fire/Heat: Used on physical objects to ignite them or melt them, such as metal. Can also be used on the body to keep it warm. This doesn’t conjure anything more than a small fire at most.
Nyx: Complete sight in the dark.
Courage in combat: Works like fortitude.
Endurance: Allows him to fight longer, to fight fatigue, to put up with more pain.
Flexibility: As it says. Increases flexibility.
Precision: In combat, this would also be applied to his arrows. It ties in with Accuracy.
Mendelin: Strengthens constitution, meant for healing but is not instantaneous like Iratze.
Amissio: Slows blood loss/speeds up natural blood replacement.
Unseen: Puts a glamour over him that rends him invisible to those without the Sight (ability to see through glamours) or who can't tear down glamours themselves. (See below.)
Visible: Become visible again after using Unseen. Typically I think Unseen and Visible would not be usable in Prisma, otherwise no one would ever see him.
Mnemosyne: For memory/memorizing things.
Stamina: For battle and in general, lets him fight longer. Also, in canon, apparently applies to sexual escapades, too.
Unlock: This is meant to be for mundane locks so Shadowhunters can go wherever they need to. It can be applied directly to a door or a lock to unlock it; the only thing it doesn't work on is magical wards/locks. In Prisma, this wouldn’t work on anywhere he’s not meant to go, such as plot-locked areas, other people’s rooms, etc. In general, he wouldn’t use it to break into anywhere unless he thought someone was in danger, anyway.
Lock: Does the opposite of Unlock, can be used on doors/windows/etc., but they can obviously still be broken or destroyed.
INVENTORY:
- His runed bow.
- A runed quiver, which, in canon, doesn’t empty. I can limit his arrows to a certain number if need be. Both quiver and bow can be glamoured to be invisible/can be summoned when in need.
- A seraph blade. This is a special Shadowhunter-crafted blade that can only be wielded by a Shadowhunter. It appears a bit like a small bladeless hilt until the blade is summoned when he needs it. He typically carries this in a sheath on his thigh.
- One stele that is his personal stele, and a back up stele. These are the only instruments capable of drawing runes on Shadowhunters/objects.
